Kevin Tsai faces mainland boycotts and increased security measures
Taiwanese entertainer Kevin Tsai is facing significant backlash and security concerns following his appearance at a political rally for Shen Po-yang. Chinese state-affiliated media and social media accounts have issued warnings against Taiwanese public figures perceived to support independence, leading to a wave of boycotts in mainland China.
In response to potential threats, Taiwan’s National Police Agency has implemented enhanced security measures for Tsai. Police have increased patrol frequency near his residence, including scheduled checks every three hours to monitor for suspicious activity, citing concerns over transnational repression.
The controversy has also impacted mainland Chinese influencers and brands. Entrepreneur Luo Yonghao, who previously described Tsai as an “idol,” faced intense online criticism and has since removed several interview videos featuring Tsai from his channels. Additionally, the Chinese electric vehicle brand Leapmotor has removed collaborative content involving the entertainer. While some observers view the commercial distancing as a form of self-censorship driven by nationalism, others in Taiwan are debating the implications for freedom of expression and the survival of artists in the current cross-strait climate.
