Shen Po-yang faces surveillance indictment and political scrutiny

Taipei mayoral candidate Shen Po-yang is facing multiple political and legal developments. Prosecutors have indicted Jun Zheng, head of WeChat Investigation, and requested a 1.5-year prison sentence for his role in a surveillance operation. The indictment alleges that Zheng directed the 24-hour monitoring of Shen and his family, which included installing a micro-camera under a motorcycle seat near Shen's residence. Two Hong Kong residents, Ju Juexian and Lin Qing, are wanted by authorities for allegedly commissioning the surveillance.

In the political sphere, Shen recently participated in a high-profile interview with journalist Chao Shao-kang, where he addressed various issues including drug policy and the Cross-Strait Forum. Shen clarified that he does not support cannabis legalization or drug decriminalization in Taiwan, though he suggested harm reduction measures for those already addicted. He also expressed willingness to participate in the Cross-Strait Forum if it occurs without political preconditions.

Additionally, Shen's campaign has drawn scrutiny following the appearance of host Kevin Tsai at a campaign event. The appearance triggered a boycott of Tsai by Chinese netizens and led to criticism from mainland Chinese media regarding perceived ties to independence movements. Meanwhile, political opponents have criticized Shen's past writings on drug policy, labeling them as risky for public safety.
