Kevin Warsh raises interest rates following divisive Fed Chair confirmation
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh has implemented his first interest rate hike since 2023, following a highly contentious Senate confirmation in May 2026. The confirmation vote was the most divisive in the history of the Federal Reserve, passing with a 54-45 margin.
Opponents of the appointment expressed concerns that Warsh might compromise the central bank's independence by aligning policies with the White House. While the S&P 500 responded with slight gains to the rate hike, questions remain regarding Warsh's ability to maintain institutional credibility, particularly as the move occurred despite public objections from President Donald Trump.
