Kezoma Millet Festival promotes climate-resilient farming in Nagaland

The second Kezoma Millet Festival was held on August 26 in Kezoma village, located near Kohima, Nagaland. Organized by the Kezoma Village Council in collaboration with the Nagaland Department of Agriculture, the event highlighted the economic and nutritional potential of millet cultivation.

During the festival, 36 cultivating groups participated, with 23 stalls selling organic produce and over 2,000 kg of freshly harvested millets. Local farmers reported that the crop serves as a significant source of income, with some seeing their earnings double.

Agriculture officials noted that millet is particularly vital for the region due to its climate resilience. The crop can withstand drought, irregular rainfall, heat, and poor soil, making it ideal for the hilly and marginal lands of Nagaland. Dr. Zasekuolie Chusi, Agriculture Production Commissioner, emphasized that millet’s ability to thrive in difficult terrains offers a sustainable alternative for farmers as traditional paddy cultivation becomes less economically viable in certain areas.
