KFOR increases presence in northern Kosovo amid security optimization

The KFOR mission has announced an increase in its presence in North Mitrovica and northern Kosovo. This move is part of an ongoing optimization process intended to ensure the mission remains effective while transitioning its permanent presence away from the main bridge over the Ibar River.

KFOR officials stated that the optimization is being conducted in coordination with Kosovo institutions, the EU, the Kosovo Police, and the EU Rule of Law Mission. The mission also maintains regular communication with local partners and the Serbian Armed Forces. While the transition on the bridge reflects an assessment of an improved security situation, KFOR noted that the process could be reversed if events occur that threaten long-term security or regional stability.

The security situation in the region remains complex due to political instability in Kosovo and tensions regarding the presence of international forces. While NATO previously planned to adjust KFOR's strength based on stability, recent developments, including disputes over property and local governance, have maintained high levels of scrutiny on the mission's role in guaranteeing peace.
