Køge Bugt mayors oppose Hvidovre land reclamation plans
Seven mayors belonging to the Køge Bugt Alliance have expressed strong opposition to Hvidovre Municipality's plans to proceed with a land reclamation and storm surge protection project near Avedøre Holme. The project involves creating a large artificial island to provide new commercial areas and protect infrastructure from flooding.
The alliance, which includes mayors from Brøndby, Køge, Greve, Vallensbæk, Ishøj, Solrød, and Stevns, raised concerns regarding the environmental impact on the bay. Specifically, they fear the project could damage eelgrass meadows and fish life, and are worried about potential pollutants in the soil used for the reclamation.
While acknowledging the need for flood protection, the mayors suggest alternative solutions, such as land-based dikes, to avoid large-scale land reclamation. The alliance recently sent a letter of concern to the Danish government, though it was reportedly addressed to the wrong ministers, causing a delay in the formal dialogue process.
