Khaar brings Northeast Indian cuisine to Sunnyvale

Khaar, the first restaurant in the Bay Area to specialize in Northeast Indian cuisine, has opened in downtown Sunnyvale. The establishment focuses on flavors from the Seven Sisters States, a region that incorporates culinary influences from neighboring Nepal, Myanmar, and China.

Owner Nandana Hazarika, a former software engineer and data analyst, transitioned to the culinary industry after auditioning for ‘MasterChef India’. The restaurant utilizes regional ingredients such as black sesame, fermented mustard, mustard oil, and fermented bamboo shoot. Hazarika noted that the cuisine emphasizes natural ingredient tastes over heavy spices, creams, or dairy.

Khaar soft opened on Murphy Street on August 14 and held its grand opening on September 12, taking over a former restaurant space in Sunnyvale.
