Khalid Shaikh Mohammed 9/11 trial tentatively set for 2028
A military judge has tentatively scheduled the trial for the alleged mastermind of the September 11 terrorist attacks, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, to begin on June 5, 2028. Lt. Col. Michael Schrama issued the ruling after rejecting a prosecution request to start proceedings in January 2027, siding with the defense that the earlier date was unrealistic.
Mohammed and three co-defendants—Walid bin Attash, Mustafa al-Hawsawi, and Ali Abdul Aziz Ali—have been held at the Guantánamo Bay detention camp since 2003. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for the defendants. A fifth individual, Ramzi bin al-Shibh, was previously found incompetent to stand trial.
The proceedings face significant legal hurdles, including disputes over the admissibility of evidence. The court is currently weighing whether to suppress confessions from defendant Ammar al-Baluchi due to allegations of torture during interrogations at Guantánamo Bay. The trial date remains subject to various procedural milestones and upcoming rulings from a military appeals court.
