Khalifa Aminu develops AI smart glasses for the visually impaired

Khalifa Aminu, a 20-year-old self-taught engineer from Kano, Nigeria, has developed AI-powered smart glasses designed to assist visually impaired individuals in navigating their surroundings independently. The device utilizes cameras, sensors, and GPS technology to detect obstacles such as vehicles and buildings. When an obstruction is identified, the glasses trigger an alarm and a vibration system to alert the wearer.

Beyond navigation, the glasses feature an AI assistant that responds to voice commands. This allows users to perform tasks hands-free, including taking photos, translating languages, reading text aloud, and asking questions. The integrated GPS system serves as a safety feature by allowing the device to transmit the wearer’s location to a caregiver via WhatsApp or email if they become lost.

Aminu, who learned engineering through online resources and AI tools, has begun real-world testing of the device with visually impaired volunteers. His work has gained national recognition, including winning the 2024 Indomie Heroes Award.
