Khalifa Haftar's forces facilitate release of American hostage

Authorities in eastern Libya, led by General Khalifa Haftar, played a decisive role in the release of American missionary Kevin Rideout, who was held captive by an Islamic State affiliate in the Sahel region of West Africa.

According to five sources cited by Reuters, the release involved facilitating Rideout's passage through Libyan territory. While four sources indicated a negotiated agreement was reached, one source suggested ransom was paid. Conversely, a senior source within Haftar's forces described the release as the result of a military operation conducted in Mali.

Rideout, an employee of the evangelical organization Serving in Mission, was abducted in Niger last October. His rescue is considered a high priority for the United States. Donald Trump expressed anticipation for Rideout's return to his home country via social media. The U.S. State Department and the White House have not officially commented on Haftar's specific involvement.
