Khalistan supporters plot attacks on India's Independence Day, agencies place Punjab on high alert

Indian intelligence agencies have warned that Khalistan‑supporting militants are planning symbolic attacks across Punjab on 15 August, the country's Independence Day. The agencies have placed Punjab on a high‑alert status and advised heightened vigilance in schools and public places.

The banned group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) and its chief Gurpatwant Singh are alleged to be mobilising youth through social‑media campaigns, urging the display of the Khalistan flag and protests against the government. Authorities are also monitoring online propaganda and reports that the groups intend to organise referendums in foreign countries. After recent crackdowns by India and Canada, some Khalistan factions attempted to relocate to Malaysia and Azerbaijan, but Malaysia deported its members earlier this year.
