Khanh Hoa intensifies efforts to combat IUU fishing

The Vietnamese province of Khanh Hoa is intensifying efforts to comply with European Commission recommendations regarding illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Local authorities are mobilizing resources to strengthen fleet control, prevent vessels from entering foreign waters illegally, and improve seafood traceability.

In areas such as the Hon Ro fishing port and Nam Nha Trang ward, task forces are monitoring vessel routes via Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS), overseeing port entry and departure procedures, and managing electronic landing control. The province has reported that all 5,120 fishing vessels measuring six meters or longer are currently marked, registered, licensed, and updated in the national VNFishbase database.

To address deficiencies identified during the European Commission’s fifth inspection, the provincial People’s Committee has approved a plan to enhance state management from capture zones to ports. This includes an “Intensive Action Month” focused on fleet management, digital monitoring systems, and the management of violation records to ensure full compliance with international fishing standards.
