Khao San Road businesses urge easing of midnight closing rules

Nightlife operators in Bangkok’s Khao San Road have formally requested that Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul review current midnight closing restrictions. Sanga Ruangwattanakul, president of the Khao San Road Business Association, submitted a letter on October 22 calling for a revision of entertainment zoning regulations.

The association argues that strict enforcement of midnight closures is harming tourism, investment, and business revenue, noting that international tourists frequently prefer to stay out later. Current zoning laws reportedly prevent many operators from obtaining the necessary licenses to operate legally past midnight, as the regulations have not evolved alongside the district’s status as a global nightlife destination.

In addition to zoning reforms, the association is calling for the accelerated implementation of the ‘Khaosan Sandbox,’ a government pilot program designed to modernize outdated regulations and improve oversight. While Anutin previously designated Khao San Road as an entertainment zone in July, specific boundaries and licensing limitations for individual venues remain undefined.
