Khaoula Khemiri wins 2026 award for female scientific research

Hydrologist and engineer Khaoula Khemiri has been awarded the 2026 Prize for Best Female Scientific Research by Tunisia’s Minister of Women, Family, and Childhood, Asma Jebri. Khemiri, a lead engineer at the National Institute of Meteorology, was recognized for her study on the impact of climate change and human pressures on blue water resources.

Her research, conducted at the National Institute of Agronomic Research of Tunisia, utilizes artificial intelligence to integrate climate, satellite, and hydrological data. This approach aims to improve decision-making and water resource management to combat water stress, a critical challenge for Tunisia caused by declining resources, irregular precipitation, and agricultural demands. The study highlights how AI can enhance climate data quality to better anticipate risks and strengthen water and food security.

During the ceremony, Minister Jebri noted the significant role of women in Tunisian higher education, stating they represent approximately 67% of students and 60% of research laboratory staff.
