Khartoum electricity shortages threaten food security

Erratic electricity supply and prolonged power outages in Khartoum are severely impacting food security and the livelihoods of local merchants. The lack of a predictable power schedule prevents residents from safely storing food and causes significant waste.

Merchants, such as juice vendors, report being forced to reduce their inventory to avoid losses from spoilage, as they can no longer rely on refrigeration. Additionally, the high cost of running generators to maintain business operations is placing a heavy financial burden on small businesses.

The crisis extends to domestic life, where power failures disable water pumps, forcing residents to rely on mobile vendors for drinking water, raising concerns regarding hygiene and sanitation.
