Khasi Students’ Union demands government commitment to five-point charter

The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has launched a campaign to demand total commitment from the Meghalaya government regarding a five-point charter of demands ahead of the upcoming Autumn Assembly session starting August 24.

KSU leadership has announced plans to approach all 36 MLAs from the Khasi-Jaintia Hills and 24 MLAs from the Garo Hills to ensure they raise these issues during the legislative session. The union has rejected any ‘compromise formula’ that involves implementing only a portion of their demands.

The five-point charter includes: • Cancellation of the public hearing regarding the Shree Cement mining project. • Full implementation of the Meghalaya Residents’ Safety and Security Act, 2016. • Implementation of the amended Migrant Workmen Act, 2020, to protect local employment. • Specific recruitment reforms at NEIGRIHMS, including gender ratios and indigenous community reservations. • Addressing broader issues related to local livelihood and ethnic rights.
