Khasi Students’ Union pushes Meghalaya to enforce Residents Safety and Security Act

The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) announced a series of public meetings and consultations across Meghalaya to press the state government for immediate implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) of 2016. KSU general secretary Reuben Najiar said the government has delayed the Act without valid reasons and that a recent RTI inquiry showed the Ministry of Home Affairs has no knowledge of the matter and the High Court has not disposed of the related case.

KSU also highlighted the lack of progress on the Umling Facilitation Centre, which it alleges has been turned into a food court, and noted that the 2019 amendment to the Act is still awaiting presidential assent due to constitutional concerns. The union argues that only the Inner Line Permit (ILP) can effectively regulate entry into the state and warns that the recent influx of people may be linked to eviction drives in neighbouring Assam and West Bengal.
