A scientific study by the Gujarat Ecological Education and Research (GEER) Foundation has identified the Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary in the Jamnagar district as a vital breeding site for the Black-necked Stork.

Conducted between July 2024 and March 2025, the research documented a 100 per cent fledging success rate among monitored nests. Researchers observed four active nests, each containing a breeding pair that successfully produced two fledglings, totaling eight juveniles. The sanctuary supported a peak seasonal population of 21 birds during the study period.

The findings, published in the Journal of Threatened Taxa, noted that the nests were located on Neltuma juliflora trees at heights ranging from 3 to 4.5 meters. This Ramsar-designated wetland is considered a highly suitable habitat for the species, which is one of India’s largest wetland birds.
