Khulna shootings: Two people killed in suspected target killings

Two separate shootings in the Khulna region of Bangladesh have sparked local security concerns. In Dighalia Upazila, Nasimul Gani Karim, a 55-year-old regional leader of the Communist Party (ML-Janayuddha), was shot and killed in front of a shop. Police are investigating potential motives, including disputes with a local group and conflicts involving a fuel smuggling ring centered around the Bhairab River. Investigators are also looking into a reported dispute between the victim and the son of a prominent local extremist figure.

In Rupsa Upazila, Akter Dhali, a 58-year-old bus worker, was also killed by gunfire in front of his home. This incident follows the previous killing of Dhali’s eldest son, Joy Dhali, on August 15.

Khulna District Police Superintendent Sarkar Omar Faruk stated that authorities view these incidents as ‘target killings’ and are reviewing video footage to identify the perpetrators. As of Tuesday afternoon, no arrests have been made in connection with either murder.
