Khyber Pakhtunkhwa energy demands and new EU migration rules

In Pakistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Energy and Power Minister Nazir Ahmed Abbasi met with Federal Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik to discuss energy issues, royalties, and constitutional rights. Abbasi formally requested the allocation of 100 MMCFD of gas to support the province's industrial sector and urged a reassessment of gas connection costs for consumers in gas-producing districts. He also reiterated a demand for 10 percent of LPG to be allocated for forest protection in KP's mountainous regions, noting public unrest regarding unpaid royalties.

Federal Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik assured the delegation of federal cooperation, citing global market pressures as a factor affecting gas supply. A joint committee at the secretary level will be established to investigate these long-standing energy issues and provide recommendations.

Separately, the European Union has approved stricter regulations regarding the return of non-European citizens who lack legal residency. Effective June 17, 2026, these rules target asylum seekers with rejected applications and individuals staying past visa expirations. Non-compliance, such as hiding identity or obstructing the return process, may lead to detention for up to 24 months, with potential extensions. Individuals deemed security risks may face long-term entry bans exceeding 10 years.
