AI adoption surges in Europe amid rising geopolitical risks

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming the industrial and economic landscape in Europe. In Germany, companies are generating over 120 billion euros in revenue through AI-driven product innovations, with AI application usage increasing by 118 percent since 2024.

However, new geopolitical dependencies are emerging. A study by the Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung warns that Chinese AI models have seen a massive surge in Europe, accounting for 58 percent of token consumption on the OpenRouter platform across the EU and 61 percent in Germany as of mid-2026.

Corporate adoption is also shifting toward 'agentic AI,' where autonomous agents manage workflows. BMW, for instance, aims for an AI-orchestrated operation by 2028. Despite this progress, governance remains a challenge; research shows that AI decision-making is often concentrated in IT departments rather than executive leadership. Additionally, sectors like banking and gastronomy are integrating AI to automate routine tasks, though banks still face hurdles in fully integrating these technologies into their core business models.
