Kia and Tata Motors prepare major SUV launches for 2027
Major automotive manufacturers are preparing significant vehicle launches and platform updates for the Indian market scheduled for 2027.
Kia is developing a hybrid version of the Seltos, which has recently entered the testing phase. While global versions utilize a 1.6L T-GDi petrol hybrid powertrain with 141PS and 265Nm of torque, reports suggest the India-spec model could feature a new strong hybrid system based on a 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine. The Seltos hybrid is expected to include features such as Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality and Smart Regenerative Braking 3.0.
Simultaneously, Kia is working on the second-generation Sonet (codename 'QY2i') on a new K1 platform, which aims to improve rear-seat legroom and introduce over-the-air software updates. Tata Motors is also reportedly developing a next-generation Nexon, codenamed 'Garud,' involving major structural and design changes.
The shift toward hybrid technology and new platforms comes amid uncertainty regarding small diesel engines; upcoming BS7 emission norms may lead manufacturers to discontinue diesel variants due to the high costs of required Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology.
