Kia EV9 owner receives 14,000 euro charging bill due to technical error
A Kia EV9 owner in Canada received a massive charging bill of approximately 14,000 euros (22,000 CAD) due to a technical malfunction at a Hypercharge station. While the actual charging session lasted only about thirty minutes and consumed 4.91 kWh, a loss of wireless connection between the charging station and the operator's central server prevented the system from registering that the vehicle had disconnected.
Because the station charges based on time, the system continued to bill for the vehicle as if it were still connected for over 460 days. The error was only resolved in August 2026 when the connection was restored. Hypercharge confirmed that the amount was never actually charged to the owner's credit card, appearing instead as a negative balance in the digital wallet of the app. The company has since corrected the session and provided the driver with a small credit as compensation.
