Kia Forte battery issues caused by surface discharge

A mechanic demonstrated how a dirty car battery can cause starting issues in a 2013 Kia Forte, even when the battery itself tests as functional. Through a video shared on TikTok, mechanic Kyle Grodkowski, known as @methodmechanic, showed that a layer of grime and corrosion on top of the battery casing can create a conductive path.

This phenomenon, referred to by some as ‘surface discharge,’ allows electricity to flow between the terminals through the dirt, moisture, and oil. In the case of the Kia, testing revealed nearly 3.5 volts passing through the layer of debris, which can rapidly drain a healthy battery and prevent a vehicle from starting.
