Kiawah Island reports record 495 sea turtle nests

Kiawah Island in South Carolina is experiencing a record-breaking sea turtle nesting season. The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol has counted 495 nests along approximately 10 miles of beach, a significant increase from the roughly 200 nests recorded in 2024. This total surpasses the island's previous second-highest season from 2022.

The island's shoreline provides ideal conditions for loggerhead sea turtles, including sufficient beach width, nighttime darkness, and a protected coastline. While the high nest count offers hope for species recovery, conservationists note that hatchlings face significant threats. Eggs incubate for about 60 days, during which they are vulnerable to storms, flooding, and predators. Even after hatching, experts estimate only about one in 1,000 hatchlings survives to adulthood due to threats from predators like raccoons, coyotes, and seabirds.

Patrol volunteers and staff continue to monitor the beaches under permits from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources to support the survival of the hatchlings as they make their way to the ocean.
