Kidney and Liver Health Risks Highlighted by Turkish Doctors

Nephrology specialist Dr. Hüseyin Çelik warned that kidney disease is becoming increasingly common, linking high blood pressure and diabetes to declining renal function. He emphasized early detection through simple blood and urine tests and regular blood‑pressure monitoring, especially for diabetics, people over 40, those with a family history, or long‑term hypertension patients. Lifestyle measures he recommended include reducing salt, avoiding processed foods, staying adequately hydrated, and maintaining a healthy weight.

Liver health experts warned that excessive alcohol and high sugar intake accelerate fatty liver disease and can progress to cirrhosis. Drinking five or more drinks in one sitting or regular heavy alcohol use was identified as a major risk, while even modest consumption can be harmful for individuals with diabetes or hypertension. They advised limiting added sugars to 25 g for women and 36 g for men per day and avoiding sugary drinks and high‑fructose corn syrup. Overall, balanced nutrition and reduced alcohol and sugar consumption were presented as key preventive strategies for both kidney and liver disease.
