Kidney health: Dietary strategies for salt reduction and meal management

Medical expert Masahiro Kozuki provides guidance on protecting kidney function through dietary adjustments, specifically focusing on salt reduction and meal frequency. While Japanese cuisine is often viewed as healthy, it can be high in sodium, which contributes to hypertension and kidney strain.

To manage salt intake, Kozuki suggests that limiting miso soup can significantly reduce daily sodium levels. For those aiming for a target of 3 to 6 grams of salt per day, avoiding miso soup or eating only the ingredients without the broth can create enough room to enjoy other meals with standard seasoning. Another strategy is to keep breakfast nearly salt-free to allow for more flexibility during lunch and dinner.

In addition to salt, Kozuki advises limiting the frequency of processed foods, fast food, fried foods, and sugary snacks to approximately once a week. He emphasizes the importance of eating slowly, starting with fiber-rich foods to prevent blood sugar spikes, and maintaining regular meal patterns to avoid placing undue stress on the kidneys.
