Kidney health: Warning signs in hydration and urination patterns

Medical experts are warning that certain hydration patterns and urinary responses can serve as early indicators of kidney failure. Dr. Xu Damin, Deputy Head of Nephrology at Peking University First Hospital, notes that modern lifestyles—including high salt intake, physical inactivity, and irregular sleep—contribute to renal exhaustion.

Key warning signs include abnormal urination timing and persistent thirst. According to research from Heidelberg University published in Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation, a healthy urinary cycle typically takes 45 to 90 minutes for water to pass through the glomeruli and reach the bladder.

If water passes through the body too quickly, it may indicate damaged renal tubules that cannot effectively reabsorb or concentrate urine. Conversely, a lack of urine production after consuming significant amounts of water (oliguria) may suggest severe glomerular sclerosis, which impairs the blood filtration process.
