Kidney health: Hydration and early detection strategies

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing global health concern, affecting approximately 850 million people—over 10% of the world's population. Reports from the International Society of Nephrology and the World Health Organization indicate that CKD causes more than 1.5 million deaths annually. In Vietnam, data suggests over 90% of those with CKD are unaware of their condition in the early stages because the kidneys lack pain-sensing nerves, often leading to diagnosis only after significant function loss.

Nutritionists emphasize that proper hydration is critical for kidney function, as kidneys filter approximately 190 liters of blood daily. Water is considered the optimal choice because it is calorie-free and lacks additives. While low-calorie options like tea, coffee, and unsweetened juices can contribute to hydration, excessive dehydration can reduce blood flow to the kidneys, potentially causing acute kidney injury or contributing to chronic disease.

To prevent kidney stones, experts recommend consuming 8-10 glasses of fluids daily. Citrus juices containing citrate may also help reduce the formation of certain calcium-based stones. Additionally, monitoring urine output is a key clinical indicator of kidney efficiency and physiological state.
