Kidney health risks identified by clinical phytotherapist

Clinical phytotherapist and naturopathy doctor Julio Cesar Luchmann has identified three primary factors that pose direct risks to kidney health: low water intake, self-medication, and gut dysbiosis.

Dehydration is cited as a leading issue, increasing the risk of kidney stones and potentially compromising renal function. While hydration needs vary based on age, weight, and activity level, those with existing kidney disease may require medical guidance on fluid restriction.

Self-medication, particularly the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen and diclofenac, can reduce blood flow to the kidneys and cause injury, especially when used in high doses or over long periods. Certain antibiotics also require dosage adjustments for patients with impaired renal function.

Additionally, dysbiosis—an imbalance of intestinal microbiota—may contribute to kidney issues by promoting the production of inflammatory substances and toxins. Maintaining a balanced diet with water-rich foods such as celery, cucumber, watermelon, and pear is recommended to support renal health.
