Kidney health risks linked to excessive vitamin and supplement use
Medical experts and the National Kidney Foundation are warning that the indiscriminate use of vitamins and dietary supplements can increase the risk of kidney damage and the formation of kidney stones.
Nephrologist Adriana Dejman highlighted that excessive intake of Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and calcium can overload the kidneys' ability to filter and eliminate substances. Specifically, high doses of Vitamin C may increase oxalate levels, contributing to calcium oxalate stones.
The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) issued a particular warning for individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD), those on dialysis, or kidney transplant recipients. For these populations, the kidneys may struggle to eliminate certain components, leading to a dangerous accumulation of minerals like potassium, phosphorus, or calcium.
Experts emphasize that 'natural' does not equate to 'safe.' Even over-the-counter products or ingredients not prominently listed on packaging, such as preservatives and excipients, can disrupt mineral balance. Patients are advised to consult with medical professionals before starting any supplement regimen to ensure proper dosage and monitoring.
