Kidney health experts warn of silent chronic kidney disease risks
Medical experts and health educators are highlighting critical gaps in kidney disease screening. Statistics indicate that more than 1 in 7 adults suffer from chronic kidney disease, yet approximately 90% remain unaware of their condition due to the silent nature of the illness.
A primary diagnostic blind spot is the lack of urine albumin testing. This inexpensive test serves as an early warning sign for kidney damage, yet it is currently performed on only 35% of diabetic patients and 4% of individuals with high blood pressure. Experts suggest that monitoring markers such as cystatin C and eGFR is vital, especially for individuals who engage in heavy weightlifting or use creatine.
Furthermore, medical professionals are working to dispel common misconceptions regarding chronic kidney disease. One major myth is that a diagnosis inevitably leads to dialysis; however, doctors note that through dietary adjustments, medication, and risk factor management, kidney function can often be maintained for many years. Early detection through blood and urine tests remains the most effective way to prevent progression to end-stage renal failure.
