Kidney transplants successful for patients in Turkey
Two separate successful kidney transplant cases involving cadaveric donors have been reported in Turkey.
In Erzurum, 60-year-old Metin Demir received a kidney transplant at the Atatürk University Organ Transplant Training and Research Center on his birthday. Demir had been undergoing dialysis for 11 years and had previously been called for nine unsuccessful transplant attempts due to tissue incompatibility. The successful procedure utilized a kidney from a donor in Giresun.
In a separate case, 11-year-old Ömer Asaf Öztürk underwent a second kidney transplant at Acıbadem Kent Hospital. Having required dialysis since birth due to multicystic dysplastic kidney disease, Öztürk had previously received a transplant at 16 months old, which was lost eight years later. This recent cadaveric transplant follows three years of hemodialysis treatment.
