Kiel University fails fourth bid for Excellence University status

The Christian-Albrechts-Universität (CAU) in Kiel has failed for the fourth time in its bid to be designated an Excellence University. This outcome has sparked intense debate within the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament regarding the region's higher education policy.

Opposition leaders from the FDP and SPD have criticized the governing CDU-Green coalition, alleging a lack of scientific advocacy and accusing the government of exacerbating chronic underfunding. FDP parliamentary group leader Christopher Vogt noted that the failure results in a loss of approximately 100 million euros in additional subsidies and criticized a hiring freeze at the university as “unplanned staff reductions.”

SPD politician Martin Habersaat called for concrete action and long-term strategic planning, warning against a narrative that everything is functioning well. In response, coalition representatives from the CDU and Greens rejected the criticisms, asserting that Schleswig-Holstein already demonstrates excellence through existing research clusters in inflammation and connectivity.
