Kilian Jornet and other favorites withdraw from UTMB 2026

Several top-tier athletes have withdrawn from the 2026 Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) scheduled to begin in Chamonix on August 28. Most notably, four-time winner Kilian Jornet has announced his withdrawal due to a persistent knee injury. After attempting conservative treatments, Jornet and his medical team have decided that surgery is necessary to address a lateral meniscus tear and cartilage issues.

Jornet, who holds the course record, was aiming for a fifth victory. Other major names confirmed to be absent include 2023 winner Jim Walmsley and Beñat Marmissolle, the latter of whom cited a foot injury sustained during a long training run. While the absence of these favorites changes the competitive landscape, organizers note that the remaining field remains highly competitive.
