Kilis historical sites highlight regional heritage

Kilis province in Turkey offers several significant historical and cultural sites, including the Ravanda Castle, Oylum Höyük, and the Kilis Museum.

Ravanda Castle, located in the Polateli district near Belenözü village, sits atop a high conical hill overlooking the Afrin River. With historical roots dating back to the 11th or 12th century, the castle served as a strategic military base during various periods, including the Crusades. Visitors must climb approximately 255 steps to reach the summit. Local residents and visitors have expressed a need for better environmental organization, increased promotion, and more comprehensive renovations to boost cultural tourism.

Other notable sites in the region include Oylum Höyük, one of the largest mounds in Southeast Anatolia, which shows continuous settlement since the Bronze Age. The Kilis Museum, located in a restored 19th-century soap factory, displays artifacts from Oylum Höyük and showcases local ethnographic culture. The city also features traditional stone houses with courtyard designs and the historic Ulu Mosque, which features Mamluk-era architecture.
