Killarney hit by severe flash flooding after intense rainfall
Killarney, Ireland, experienced severe flash flooding following intense rainfall, which Mayor John O’Donoghue described as the ‘absolute worst in living memory.’ The deluge, characterized by nearly six centimeters of rain falling within a four-hour window—with much of it concentrated in just 90 minutes—submerged homes, vehicles, and businesses.
Significant disruption occurred on major routes, including the N22 between Kerry and Cork, and Park Road, which became impassable. The Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre was forced to close due to damage. While Kerry County Council crews worked to assess the impact and assist affected properties, they reported that the flooding has since cleared and roads have reopened.
In addition to Killarney, heavy rainfall impacted Dublin, where Phoenix Park recorded 40mm of rain in two hours. A Status Orange rain warning was issued for Dublin following the intense downpours, and flooding was also reported in the Cabra area.
