Kim Byung-ki: Police seek arrest warrant over 13 allegations

South Korean police have applied for an arrest warrant for independent lawmaker Kim Byung-ki following a year-long investigation into 13 different allegations of misconduct. The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Public Crime Investigation Division cited objective evidence of criminal activity and the risk of evidence destruction as reasons for the request.

The allegations against Kim include bribery and obstruction of business under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes. Specifically, investigators are looking into claims that Kim sought preferential treatment for his second son's university transfer and employment through bribery. Other allegations involve receiving illegal donations and hotel vouchers from companies such as Silla Leisure and Korean Air, as well as overlooking illegal nomination fees during local elections.

Kim has appeared for questioning seven times over the past year. Following the police application, the case will move to the prosecution; if a warrant is requested, the National Assembly must vote on an arrest motion to allow for his detention.
