Kim Jong Un attends Liberation Day events amid silence on peace proposal
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un participated in several commemorative events marking the 81st anniversary of Liberation Day. On August 14, Kim visited the Daeseongsan Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery and the Anti-Japanese Revolutionary Martyrs' Memorial Tower alongside his wife, Ri Sol Ju, and daughter, Kim Ju Ae.
Following the memorial, Kim attended a national circus performance at the Pyongyang Circus Theatre and various sporting events, including swimming and diving competitions. Kim Ju Ae was observed sitting prominently next to her father during these events, marking her first appearance at a Liberation Day memorial service.
These activities come amid a lack of response from Pyongyang regarding a proposal made by South Korean President Lee Jae-myung. In his Liberation Day speech, President Lee suggested initiating multilateral discussions among relevant parties to transition the Korean Peninsula from an unstable armistice system to a permanent peace regime and to end the war.
