Kim Jong Un Reaffirms North Korea–Russia Strategic Partnership on Victory Day

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un sent a congratulatory message to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Russia’s Victory Day, marking the 81st anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany. In the message, Kim reaffirmed that the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership treaty signed in 2024 remains a top priority for Pyongyang and pledged to faithfully fulfil the obligations of the mutual‑defence pact.

The statement follows earlier cooperation that saw North Korea deploy roughly 14,000–15,000 troops to assist Russian forces in the war in Ukraine, with South Korean and Ukrainian officials reporting more than 6,000 North Korean casualties. Russia’s Victory Day celebrations this year are being held with a scaled‑back parade amid ongoing fighting and security concerns.

Kim’s message underscores the continued political alignment between the two states and their commitment to mutual assistance in the event of aggression, reinforcing a Cold‑War‑era alliance that has drawn international scrutiny and sanctions.
