Kim Min-seok initiates party unification and real estate tax revisions

Democratic Party leader Kim Min-seok has initiated a series of political and policy shifts following his election. He has ordered the creation of a 'Great Unification Promotion Task Force' to build alliances with progressive and reformist parties, with Park Bum-kye appointed as head. Additionally, Kim announced task forces to evaluate the recent party convention and to address issues regarding party membership integrity, including suspected external interference.

On the policy front, Kim and the South Korean government have reached a consensus to revise proposed real estate tax reforms. The discussions focused on easing the tax burden for single-home owners who do not reside in their properties. Specifically, there is a push to expand the recognition of 'inevitable reasons' for non-residency and to reconsider reducing the comprehensive real estate tax basic deduction from 1.2 billion won to 900 million won. Kim also cautioned that converting long-term capital gains tax deductions into residence-based deductions could negatively impact the rental market.

In a separate meeting, Kim met with People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok to express a commitment to bipartisan dialogue. While the leaders discussed cooperation, they maintained differing views on judicial procedures and the consistency of real estate policies.
