Kim Min-seok navigates Democratic Party disputes and reform proposals
Democratic Party of Korea leader Kim Min-seok is navigating internal party tensions and external political conflicts. Kim has engaged in a heated verbal dispute with independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon regarding past allegations of political fund violations and involvement in entertainment venues. Kim characterized Han as a “half-brother” to former President Yoon Suk-yeol, while Han dismissed Kim’s defenses as an admission of guilt.
Internally, the party is facing friction regarding prosecutorial reform. Gyeonggi Governor Choo Mi-ae has criticized the current direction of reform and specific appointments, leading to clashes with the party’s pro-Lee Jae-myung faction. Kim Min-seok has responded by emphasizing the need for party discipline and adherence to official policy.
To strengthen ties with progressive allies and boost public support, Kim has proposed several electoral reforms. These include lowering the threshold for forming a parliamentary negotiating group from 20 to 15 seats, introducing a runoff system for presidential elections, and implementing more rational electoral systems. Additionally, Kim suggested increasing housing investment to between 10 and 20 trillion won through future response funds to address public concerns.
