Democratic Party of Korea leadership race enters critical phase
The Democratic Party of Korea's leadership race is currently a tight contest between candidates Kim Min-seok, Jung Chung-rae, and Song Young-gil. Following the second week of regional primaries, Kim Min-seok has taken a slight lead in cumulative votes with 46.01%, holding a narrow 1.48 percentage point margin over Jung Chung-rae, who stands at 44.53%.
Kim secured victories in the Jeju, Incheon, Gangwon, and Daegu-Gyeongbuk regions. Jung, however, maintains strong support and remains a major contender as the race moves toward the critical Honam and Seoul/Gyeonggi regions, which account for a significant portion of the party's dues-paying members.
The election features several complexities, including a preferential voting system and the influence of general public opinion polls. Tensions between factions have also emerged, with candidates exchanging criticisms over political loyalty and past actions. The final results will be determined by the combination of party member votes (70%) and public opinion polls (30%) during the national convention on August 17.
