Kim So-young sentenced to life imprisonment for motel drug murders

Kim So-young, a 20-year-old woman accused of a series of drug-induced murders at motels in Gangbuk, Seoul, has been sentenced to life imprisonment in her first trial. The Seoul Northern District Court ordered her to wear an electronic tracking device for 30 years.

Between December 2023 and February 2024, Kim provided beverages laced with benzodiazepines to several men, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and leaving another unconscious. The court rejected Kim's defense that she administered the drugs to prevent sexual assault, noting that KakaoTalk messages showed no evidence of such intent. The court also found that Kim had used ChatGPT to learn the conditions necessary to cause death through drug use.

While prosecutors had requested the death penalty, the court ruled that such an ultimate punishment could not be justified in this specific case. However, the judges noted that Kim's crimes were premeditated and characterized by “unacceptable excuses” rather than genuine remorse. The court also took into account her history of childhood abuse and social isolation when determining the sentence.
