Kim Tae-gyun wins lawsuit against Korea Coast Guard
Kim Tae-gyun, the current head of the Pohang Coast Guard Station and former head of the Korea Coast Guard's criminal affairs division, has won an administrative lawsuit against the Korea Coast Guard. The Incheon District Court ruled that the agency's decision to remove him from his position was an abuse of discretionary power.
Kim had been dismissed following the 2020 death of a Coast Guard official in the West Sea, an incident where initial reports suggested the official had defected to North Korea. While the Coast Guard later reversed its findings, the court noted that Kim had already been without a post for 18 months and that the dismissal was effectively against a non-existent position. The court also cited the fact that previous leadership was acquitted and that prosecutors had previously decided not to indict Kim.
