North Korea has responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to scale back the Ulchi Freedom Shield joint military exercises with South Korea by launching a barrage of short-range ballistic missiles. The missile launches, involving approximately twelve projectiles with a range of about 300 kilometers, occurred shortly after Trump announced plans to pursue a face-to-face summit with Kim Jong Un later this year.

Kim Yo Jong, sister of Kim Jong Un, issued a statement through state media mocking the South Korean military as a ‘puppet army’ and describing the U.S.-South Korea alliance as a relationship akin to that between a ‘master and a servant.’ She accused South Korean President Lee Jae Myung of ‘double-dealing’ and dismissed the reduction of military drills as an insufficient goodwill gesture, stating that Pyongyang has no interest in such measures.

While Kim Yo Jong acknowledged that the personal relationship between Trump and Kim Jong Un remains ‘excellent,’ she emphasized that personal diplomacy would not override North Korea’s strategic security priorities. The South Korean presidential office has urged Pyongyang to halt its derogatory remarks, stating they do not assist in building mutual trust.
