Kimberley observes World Mosquito Day and historical milestones

August 20 marks World Mosquito Day, an observance dedicated to raising awareness about the transmission of malaria and the role of various creatures in the circle of life.

Historical events noted in Kimberley include Jan Smuts delivering his first political speech in the Town Hall in 1895. Additionally, the date commemorates Mary Hirst Watkins, a nursing pioneer and founder of modern midwifery training in South Africa, who passed away in 1905. The Kimberley Junior School was also officially opened on this day in 1977.
