The Wall Street Journal has reported that Kimberly Guilfoyle, the US Ambassador to Greece, allegedly suggested that the United States could influence the removal of governments in various countries. According to the report, during a diplomatic dinner in Athens in March, Guilfoyle made these remarks while discussing the political instability in Romania, which eventually led to the collapse of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan's government in May 2026.

During the exchange, Guilfoyle reportedly told attendees, “We can do this to any country we want. We can do it here,” in response to discussions involving Greek Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou. The minister allegedly countered that the US cannot replace a democratically elected government in Greece. The reported comments come amid Guilfoyle's efforts to promote the Vertical Corridor, a project designed to transport American liquefied natural gas (LNG) through Greece to Southeast Europe.

Guilfoyle's legal counsel has contested the accuracy of the WSJ's account of the conversation. In Romania, AUR President George Simion responded to the reports, stating that while he is a personal friend of the ambassador, he finds the claims of US intervention in the Bolojan government's fall to be uncredible and maintains that he does not accept external interference in Romanian politics.
