Kimchi Probiotic Research Indicates Potential to Bind Microplastics

Recent laboratory research examined probiotic bacteria present in kimchi, the fermented Korean vegetable dish. The study found that a specific strain of beneficial bacteria can attach to microscopic plastic particles in a simulated human gut environment, suggesting a possible role for kimchi in helping the body eliminate micro‑plastics. The experiments were conducted in vitro and in animal models, and the authors caution that results are preliminary and not yet proven in humans.

Kimchi is widely consumed worldwide for its probiotic content, fiber, and associated health benefits to digestion, immunity and cardiovascular health. The new findings add a novel angle to the growing interest in fermented foods and their impact on human health.
