Lando Norris takes historic pole at inaugural Madrid Grand Prix

Lando Norris secured the first pole position in the history of the new Madring semi-urban circuit in Madrid during the qualifying session for the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix. Norris, driving for McLaren, recorded a time of 1:31.824, narrowly beating Mercedes' championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli by just 0.011 seconds. Max Verstappen of Red Bull will start third.

Argentine driver Franco Colapinto, competing for Alpine, delivered a standout performance by qualifying ninth. Colapinto expressed satisfaction with the result, noting it was one of his best qualifying sessions despite the car's performance limitations. He managed to outpace his teammate Pierre Gasly, who will start 14th.

The inaugural race at the Madring circuit features a 5.4 km track with 22 corners, including the steeply banked ‘La Monumental’. The event marks the return of Formula 1 to Madrid after a 45-year hiatus. The race is scheduled for Sunday, September 13, 2026.
